Critical Thinking

Critical thinking skills are very important for any student, whether they are in elementary, middle school or high school. These skills can be learned and developed by students who take a few minutes each day to think critically about their world and what is going on around them. By developing these skills early on, students will become more aware of the information that they receive from their teachers, parents and peers. They will also be better equipped to make informed decisions as adults.

One of the most common questions that I get asked is how do you develop critical thinking skills. In order to answer this question it is important to first understand what critical thinking is.

Critical thinking is the process of analyzing, evaluating, interpreting and synthesizing information in order to draw conclusions. It is the ability to think independently and to consider alternative points of view. Critical thinking is also the process of using reason to solve problems. Students should be taught how to apply critical thinking to the problems that they encounter in the classroom, at home, in the community and in the workplace.

There are many ways to help your child develop critical thinking skills. The best way to begin is to have them read books that challenge their beliefs and values. For example, if your child believes that all people are equal, then reading a book that challenges this belief is a good way to begin. Also, have them watch television programs that discuss controversial issues such as gun control, abortion, religion, and politics.

Another way to help your child develop critical thought skills is to talk with them about what they learn in school. This can be done during dinner time or while they are watching television. Have them write down the things that they are learning in school and discuss those ideas with you.
